Parallels Management Console

Parallels Management Console (PMC, formerly Virtuozzo Management Console, VZMC) is a powerful graphical management console for administrators to manage Parallels Virtuozzo Containers servers. PMC empowers IT professionals to effectively manage individual servers with hundreds of containers with PMC tools, including a wizard to create container and application templates that enable efficient container configuration, application loading and software patch management.

PMC enables IT administrators to effectively manage individual physical servers and deploy and update applications simultaneously on the servers. PMC provides a centralized view of multiple server information and software versions across all server resources, giving IT administrators an efficient, user-friendly interface for versioning and patch management. Virtuozzo replaces the most popular server resource management tool - the spreadsheet.

PMC is included free in Parallels Virtuozzo Containers and complements Parallels Infrastructure Manager (PIM), a web browser-based management interface add-on that provides role-based, anytime, anywhere access for IT administrators and users to connect to the containers and the residing applications within. Users can manage multiple physical servers and containers securely and with greater flexibility.

General Management Features

IT administrators of any level can create and provision multiple containers at the same time, move containers to other physical servers and start/stop and reboot as many containers as required. PMC makes the management across Windows and Linux servers very similar and transparent, quickly empowering IT professionals with a short learning curve. Even better, container owners and users with systems administrator rights can perform all of the administrative functions for their assigned containers without the help of IT.

  • Container Configuration - Modify configuration resource management parameters, including CPU, memory, network I/O and hard drive resources.
  • Container Creation Wizards - Create virtual servers in a couple of clicks and modify the settings for resource management by creating container templates through an intuitive wizard interface.
  • Container Migration - Migrate containers between physical servers.
  • Container Repair - Boot servers in repair mode and fix server problems.
  • Network Bandwidth, Classes Management and Accounting - Limit the total bandwidth on a per-container basis. Configure classes of bandwidth to be assigned to new containers quickly. Monitor network data transfer on an aggregate and class basis.

Template Management

An OS or application template is a snapshot that can be applied to multiple containers or servers, saving initial application provisioning time and application and OS updating/upgrading time. These templates help IT administrators efficiently set up and effectively manage containers.

  • Template Creation Wizard - Create a template using the intuitive wizard.
  • Template Customization - Easily alter out-of-the-box templates or existing templates to create new customized templates.
  • Revert Upgrade - Revert an upgrade/update when applied through a template.

Monitoring and Logging

IT professionals can effectively track containers’ performance and quickly resolve problems with alerting and logging functions.

  • Alerting - Define one of many alert mechanisms (email, pop-up, etc.) to proactively inform administrators of threshold issues associated with resource parameters to ensure that containers have the required resources to maintain optimal performance.
  • Event Log - General log information contains container creation, starts and stops and can be configured to capture every command that Parallels Virtuozzo runs.
  • PMC Monitor - Graphically display real-time container resource parameter information and replay log history. Intelligence built into the monitor remembers what information has been previously queried and will update once invoked.

Security

PMC provides an intuitive interface to set up the security parameters for containers and physical servers, including securing containers' Internet connections, a critical service offering.

  • Hardware Node Firewall Configuration - Intuitive GUI enables administrators to disable unwanted access to a physical server.
  • Container Firewall Configuration - Provide firewall protection on a per-container basis.
  • Virtualized Firewall - Virtualizes a firewall on the host system to designated containers.
  • Critical Service Templates - PMC includes predefined templates for creating critical services such as the set up of DNS. The templates contain generally recommended resource parameter information and firewall information if applicable.
